August 2026 in returns
August has widened the split that defined the early summer rather than closing it. Equities are broadly higher — the Nasdaq up 5.3%, the S&P 500 4.0%, the Russell 2000 4.7% and the Dow 2.4%, with Japan's Nikkei the standout at 6.8% — and the strength is genuinely broad, 632 of the 869 stocks we track (73%) sitting green. Crypto has gone from lagging to motionless: Bitcoin is exactly flat at 0.0% on the month, Ethereum up 0.7%, Solana 2.4%, and breadth has collapsed to 85 of 188 coins (45%), worse than the 61% it held mid-month. The macro backdrop turned friendlier without helping: both CPI and PPI came in cool, which drained what was left of the market's Federal Reserve rate-hike bets, and crude eased as flows through the Strait of Hormuz recovered toward 9 million barrels a day on the US government's estimate — the chokepoint carries Gulf producers' exports, not America's, and the figure is a fraction of what it moves in a normal year. Separately, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has now been drawn down near the level where regulators worry about damaging the caverns themselves. Gold added 8.1%.
Leadership was AI infrastructure, and it was emphatic. Atlassian leads the board at +60.6%, with Everpure +53.1%, CoreWeave +46.7%, Nebius +45.8%, Palantir +41.4% and Supermicro +40.3% — a list that is almost entirely companies selling picks and shovels to the same buildout. Nvidia's own 12.2% is modest beside them, though it disclosed a $21 billion stake in SpaceX and now carries a $5.4 trillion market value; Goldman described funding that buildout as its latest cash cow. The damage was narrow and specific rather than thematic: DaVita fell 25.0%, Trade Desk 21.6%, AppLovin 20.3%, and the freshly spun-out Honeywell Aerospace 19.5% after what its own analysts called a shockingly bad debut.
The month's real story is that crypto's institutional adoption headlines have never been louder while its prices have never been quieter. UBS raised its Bitcoin ETF call exposure twenty-four-fold, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley both increased ETF positions, Paul Tudor Jones's firm bought back into BlackRock's fund after a year of selling, and Israel's largest bank began offering Bitcoin, Ether and Solana trading — and against all of it Bitcoin moved 0.0%. The pressure came from the other direction: MSCI proposed excluding companies whose balance sheets are mostly one token from its indices, which puts Strategy and Metaplanet at risk of forced selling by index funds, and both are sitting on unrealized losses. Gold, up 8.1%, beat all five of the largest coins, with only Chainlink (+14.9%), Monero (+14.5%) and Hyperliquid (+8.8%) ahead of it among the majors.

Counts are the assets with a completed return for August 2026 — not the current universe. The crypto count moves month to month as coins enter and exit the top 600; new stock listings and delistings shift the equity count the same way.
