June 2026 in returns
June 2026 split the market cleanly in two. Crypto took the brunt of it: Bitcoin fell 20.4% on the month, Ethereum 21.7%, and Solana 10.7% โ and the weakness was broad rather than isolated, with just 36 of the 203 coins we track finishing green, a bruising 18% participation rate. Equities barely flinched at the index level by comparison (the S&P 500 slipped 1.1% and the Nasdaq 2.8%, while the Dow actually rose 2.5%) and stayed constructive underneath, where 538 of 871 stocks โ roughly 62% โ closed higher. The clearest bridge between the two worlds was MicroStrategy: the market's best-known Bitcoin-treasury proxy was the single worst performer in the entire S&P universe at -45.4%, a blunt reminder that "Bitcoin exposure dressed up as an equity" ultimately trades like the former, not the latter.
Underneath the flat headline indices, the leadership was unusually narrow and cyclical. Semiconductor-equipment names ran the table โ Applied Materials gained 60.6%, KLA 57.0%, and Marvell 45.3% โ even as the broader Nasdaq finished lower, the kind of divergence that says capital rotated rather than left. The losers' column told the mirror-image story: beyond MicroStrategy, the damage clustered in richly-valued software and IT-services (Oracle -35.1%, Accenture -33.5%, Cognizant -30.5%) and in Super Micro (-36.4%). Net-net, June rewarded the picks-and-shovels of the chip cycle and punished anything priced for perfection โ with crypto, and the equities most tethered to it, absorbing the heaviest blows.
