October 2024 in returns
October 2024 was the month the surface and the substance disagreed. The headline indices moved very little — the S&P 500 slipped 1.0%, the Nasdaq 0.5% and the Dow 1.3% — but underneath, only 332 of 865 stocks (38%) finished higher, and the VIX rose 38.4%. An index that barely moves while two-thirds of its constituents fall and volatility is repriced sharply higher is not a calm market; it is a market bracing. Crypto sent a similar mixed signal: Bitcoin gained 11.0% and Solana 10.6%, yet just 22 of 78 coins (28%) were green, so the strength was concentrated in the largest names and almost nowhere else.
What did work was leveraged and speculative in equal measure. MicroStrategy rose 45.0%, Carvana 42.0%, United Airlines 37.1%, Astera Labs 33.9% and Celestica 33.8%, with Texas Pacific Land up 31.8%. The losers were defensive and healthcare names that offered no such torque — Estée Lauder -30.9%, Huntington Ingalls -30.0%, Elevance -22.0%, Regeneron -20.3% — alongside Super Micro's continued unwind at -30.1%. Money was not leaving the market; it was concentrating into the highest-beta expression of it while quietly paying up for protection. That is a posture, not a trend, and it resolved emphatically the following month.

Counts are the assets with a completed return for October 2024 — not the current universe. The crypto count moves month to month as coins enter and exit the top 600; new stock listings and delistings shift the equity count the same way.
